All My Life
"All My Life" is one of the first songs for which I wrote the lyrics. Writing such a song is quite a differnt experience from when I use someone else's words. When the words are not my own, they are what I begin with. It is within them that I find the story, the emotions and, finally, the melody that I think expresses in music what the words have said in prose or poetry.
When the words are my own, they are not the starting point. The starting point is my life. My thoughts. My experiences. My feelings. And then the words come. Sometimes. Sometimes the music comes first and then the words come to me while I am playing the music.
As for the story for this particular song, I think it tells the story pretty well on its own so I'll let it do so.
--------
All my life,
I've been waiting for you.
Repeat.
But now that I've found you,
I keep waiting to love you.
Tell me, what am I waiting for?
All my life,
I've been searching for truth.
Repeat.
But now that I've found it,
I keep waiting to speak it.
Tell me, what am I waiting for?
All my life,
I've been losing my way.
Repeat.
But now that I've found it,
I keep waiting to follow it.
Tell me, what am I waiting for?
I'm waiting to know that my heart can be trusted.
I'm waiting to know that my truth will be heard.
And I'm waiting to believe in me.
But now it's time to trust without knowing.
Now it's time to speak so I can be free.
And now it's time to know
if I just keep on going,
that soon I will believe in me.
Yes now is the time
to know if I just keep on going,
that soon I will believe in me.
